Dear comfort zone
Every day since I decided to turn my dream of starting a small company into reality, I’ve felt somewhat scared. Honestly, I’m not even sure it’s fear I’m feeling, but there is certainly a strong sense of discomfort.
I’ve realized this discomfort is always there when I step outside my comfort zone. So I decided to write you a letter, dear comfort zone.
'''Dear Comfort Zone,
Only three years ago, I didn’t even know you existed. It was in the heat of that July that you made yourself known, the moment I started thinking about leaving you behind, if only for six months.
It wasn’t pleasant to watch you suffer so much, all that crying and yelling over a mere six-month trip to Kenya. I mean, really, what was that about?
But now, in 2026, we have had time to reflect... it's already more than a year I've come back.
Let me start by saying I’m sorry. I promised you that it would be the first and last time I left you behind. But I now realize I wasn’t being honest with myself. Soon after leaving you, I discovered that the world around me was full of opportunities and adventures, and yes, of risks and setbacks too, the very things you so efficiently tried to protect me from. But, you know, navigating rough waters can make you a great sailor, and I think that, in the long run, this path may be more rewarding for me.
I’m not breaking up with you altogether, though. I’ve just realized that we could have a healthier relationship if we were simply friends. We could hang out from time to time, share a coffee or a drink in the evening. The things friends do. In the end, I still love your company.
Thanks for what you have given me in these years,
Looking forward to out next meetup.
Massimo'''
I’d hate to admit it to Ms. Comfort Zone, but I’m not at all sure about my choice. I just hope I’m right. Anyway, it’s comforting to think that many choices are reversible, and that what feels huge now will seem trivial, almost ridiculous, to the person I’ll be later. Thinking about it, I can hardly tell what exactly I’m scared of. Maybe it’s just the unknown, and that would be fine.
